Ex-BC Green leader voted for Liz May and says he’s a Mark Carney fan, but remains leery of Liberals
Andrew Weaver is back with pragmatic endorsements.
Former BC Greens leader Andrew Weaver endorsed Justin Trudeau in 2021 and says he “desperately” wants Mark Carney to remain as Prime Minister in 2025.
However, Weaver said on his blog that he does not want to see a majority Liberal government and remains “unconvinced that Liberal insiders and staffers have taken heed of the message that they were sent by Canadians.”
Weaver endorsed two Greens and four NDP candidates on Vancouver Island, including Sooke Mayor Maja Tait in Esquimalt-Sooke-Saanich. The Liberals had courted Weaver to run against her on April 28.
The University of Victoria professor, whose support for the NDP made John Horgan premier in 2017, said he voted April 18 for Green co-leader and Saanich-Gulf Islands MP Elizabeth May. He also praised NDP candidate and Saanich councillor Colin Plant, who “exemplifies stellar leadership in governance.”
Last fall, Weaver endorsed a dozen B.C. election candidates from the NDP, Conservative Party of B.C. and independents formerly with BC United. He publicly expressed criticism of both NDP Premier David Eby and his successor as Green leader, Sonia Furstenau.
